The Wall Mounted Aquarium - A Living Picture

August 31, 2007

There are two types of . One is the type which you hang on the wall much like a picture - not great for a saltwater aquarium and to be honest I am not sure I like the look of them. Not a great deal of room for the fish to move about, what about the filtration, lighting etc - not for me thank you.

And then there is the other - a full size aquarium which is fitted into the wall so that only the front glass is visble on the front. [Read more]

Buying A New Marine Fish

August 31, 2007

Marine Fish

All aquarists need to buy livestock, and the majority of livestock purchases are from a local fish shop (LFS). There are certain points that need to be watched for when the livestock is selected.

The aquarist may just be ready to start introducing marine fish, and the first action is to consider the type of fish to be stocked. Is the aquarium fish only of reef? If fish only there is more general freedom in choice, but eventual size, territoriality/aggression, and compatibility with tank mates has to be considered. It will not be very pleasing if one fish finds another fish a tasty meal, or fish fight. So the aquarist needs to consider the type of fish only aquarium, be it big fish, small fish, aggressive fish etc. Great care needs to be taken at this stage. Before going to the LFS, research should be done and a list of possible candidates drawn up. All the fish may not be available, but the plan is there. [Read more]

August 29, 2007

We have received a fair few emails from people asking what all the buttons and images on the site are for.

The buttons in question are the ones like Digg, Stumble Upon, Share This, Reddit, Netscape etc etc.

I shall attempt to cover what these are for in this post. [Read more]

The Coral Propagation Aquarium

August 29, 2007

A lot has been said about wild because of the known concerns on the future of these areas. Marine aquarists will also be concerned as none would wish to see wild reefs reduce. Unfortunately, they appear to be doing just that. I’m not going to natter on about this, but am going to write about propagating corals - not how to cut corals on this occasion, but how to prepare a place to put the cuttings. It is not expensive, and no great skills are required. [Read more]

Drilling Glass In The Aquarium

August 28, 2007

This post is aimed more for the do it yourself orientated people or for people who are rather brave and want to give it a go.

So why would you need to drill your aquarium in the first place. If you run a sump or another type of external aquarium then you need to get the water to them. It is much easier to get water to flow through a hole in the glass than attempting to get the water to go up and over it. [Read more]

Have One Of A Kind - Consider A Custom Aquarium

August 27, 2007

We all know that we can pop off down to the local shop and purchase an aquarium and if they have one in stock you can take it home with you that very same day. If one is not in stock then it can be ordered for delivery.

This is all well and good - there are some great sizes and shapes to be purchased.

But what if you have an irregular sized alcove or perhaps you are considering having an in wall aquarium. [Read more]

Book Review -’Aquarium Corals’ by Eric H. Borneman

August 26, 2007

Aquarium Corals Eric Borneman is well known in marine aquarium circles. He is sometimes quoted as a reference by other authors, which says a lot. He has written for various hobby magazines in both the USA and Europe. He has also dived on many wild reefs and is involved with research and conservation.

The book is obtainable in two versions, hardback and softback. Clearly the hardback version will be more expensive but will resist handling better. The one I have is a softback and it is obvious that it has been used quite a lot. The softback measures 9 ¼” (235 mm) high by 8 ½” (216 mm) wide and contains 464 pages. The pages are of glossy paper and are reasonably robust. The print is high quality and very easy to read. [Read more]
