What Is A Reef Ready Aquarium

October 31, 2007

The aquarist setting up a reef aquarium system by individually purchasing all the various hardware devices has a lot to do, particularly if it is a first system. There are so many questions to be answered, and so much research to be done.

The danger with a system put together by the aquarist is that one or more of the devices to be used may be below par. If the research is inadequate in any way, or if the aquarist has been surprised by the cost of some devices, aquarium equipment may not be up to the job or corners may have been cut to save money. Any actions such as these are likely to lead to problems.

Loads Of Micro Bubbles In My Sump

October 30, 2007

I have a sump on my saltwater aquarium which is fed by four overflows from the main display aquarium.

This sump contains a deep sand bed, a refugium and all the equipment which can be hidden (heaters, return pump, protein skimmer, calcium reactor and auto top up)

For some reason and I don’t know why I suddenly started getting loads of micro bubbles in my sump.

I checked all the overflows to see if anything has moved and I was unable to locate anything.

The only thing that I saw is that the pipes which enter the first chamber of my sump are a bit too deep in the water for my liking.

As I have not solvent welded these aspects of the plumbing I was able to remove them whilst doing a water change (when the water was low enough in the main display aquarium so as not to overflow down to the sump)

I cut the pipes back so that they are now only about ¾” under the water surface in the first chamber. This chamber is also full of small pieces of live rock rubble which acts as a type of baffle.

The result – no more bubbles!

As said I have absolutely no idea why it suddenly started happening as it was not doing this a couple of days ago but at least I was able to identify a way to resolve it.

Why Does Coralline Algae Sometimes Turn White

October 29, 2007

Due to a technical issue this article has been replaced. The new article can be located :
http://www.aquaristsonline.com/blog/general/coralline-algae-is-not-supposed-to-be-white/

Coralline algae, in my opinion make the rock within a saltwater aquarium look more natural as well as adding a differing type of colour to the aquarium.

The colour of coralline algae is normally a deep red/purple however there are various colour variations which may occur.

So what can make coralline algae sometimes turn white?

Choose The Best Protein Skimmer You Can Comfortably Afford

October 28, 2007

Obtaining equipment for the fish only or reef aquarium is an important step on the journey towards success. Research again is the key, rather than purchasing an item that ‘should do.’

A major item of equipment for the marine system is a protein skimmer. This device removes [tag-tec]dissolved organic matter[/tag-tec] completely from the aquarium seawater. Why is this so good? The organics are removed before they are acted upon by the natural processes in the aquarium when they are eventually turned, up to a point, into nitrate. So, the more efficient the skimmer the less pollution.

Aquarium Additives, Water Volume And Displacement

October 27, 2007

I was doing my maintenance last night and was putting in a few additives. I was adding these in line with manufacturer’s instructions (adding so many ml for every so many gallons of water). I know how much water volume I have in my aquarium and sump but I am not 100% sure how much I have after displacement.

What Is Displacement

October 26, 2007

Unless I’m mistaken, it was a Greek called Archimedes who was having a bath one day. He filled the bath full, as the story goes, and climbed in. Of course, the bathwater overflowed. Archimedes puzzled a moment then, realizing what had happened, shouted ‘Eureka!’ and ran out naked. He had discovered displacement.

Does A Nano Reef Need A Protein Skimmer

October 25, 2007

Nano reef aquariums are now very popular, because their size means they can be fitted almost anywhere in the home, and there are ready built systems that can be matched in to the home décor. Nano reef systems are small, meaning that they can be anything up to a net 50 gallons. Some are very small, only 10 gallons or so.
