This guest post was published as it was an informative post, however as John has said we do not advocate in any way the use of fish to cycle the aquarium.

You are very correct that this is exceptionally stressful to the fish and as you say it is plain torture to the animal,

In no way should this method be performed.

I shall add a section to the bottom of the article stating that this method should not be used.

Thanks for commenting.

Why would you cycle with a live fish, even a damsel? It is very stressful of the fish and unnecessary. That is bad advice. You are advocating the torture of fish. That is very out of date advice. Live rock or a bit of fish food will be more then enough to start the ammonia cycle. There have need enough fish death due to this type of advice?

A really good and interesting article. If new aquarists went doen this road problems and failures would be very greatly reduced.
The only area I'm not fully happy with is using damsels to cycle a tank. In the first place I don't like any life form, hardy or not, subjected to toxic ammonia/nitrite spikes. Also, if the aquarium contains a reef, catching them after cycling is complete can be a problem. Damsels are aggressive little devils for the most part, some worse than others, and they could cause difficulties and problems later on. A personal point maybe.
Nice to see the article on the site, and hope in time there may be more.
