Luke : I agree, I also try to go to my lfs as often as I can and have over the years built up a bit of a rapport with them as well as an amount of trust. It is nice to order face to face but at times the internet is an awful lot easier.

txmcse : We would love it if Google listed us at the top as well - think of all the traffic we would get!. Seriously though you are very right. If you order from the internet it may be cheaper but you dont have anyone to talk to, no-one to build trust with and no-one to rely on when/if you need them. I'm sure if you were upgrading to a bigger tank that your LFS would lend you loads of buckets etc to do it but would an internet shop?

It's a shame that google doesn't index posts like these right at the top. My tank was an impulse buy. I had been wanting one for a long time, but not knowing the amount of care it would take, I only got a little 24 gallon nano cube, and set it up with salt [ I can't really call it a reef tank yet :) ]

In retrospect I could have saved a bit of cash if i had bought on the inet, or even shopped other LFSs. I've expanded my knowledge base since that first purchase about 2 months ago. I checked out the other LFSs, and started reading blogs like this one. If i knew then, what I know now... I would have still over paid to have Tony (the one man band behind my LFS) advising me on the path to take with my tank.

I know I *can* go to other sources, but I know that Tony has to make a living... and if i want to keep getting great answers from him, I'm going to want him to keep making that living at my LFS. Right now I'm breaking even at with my LFS.. it costs me a little more for my livestock, but I'm getting things like live rock cheaper than anywhere else I can find. I think that even when I can't find great values on equipment or supplies that I need.. I'll still shop with him from time to time.. and I'll pay him to test my water. because it is already clear, that until I've seen it all.... I need my LFS to help see it for me.

It definitely does pay to get to know people at local fish stores, if available. The places where I live don't really seem to have much in stock, but when asking about what they can get they seem like they can order in anything and also are pretty nice and helpful people after getting to know them. I always try to give the local guys a shot before ordering something online.
