What Is An RSS Feed?

What Is RSS?

(Skip this section if you already know all about RSS)

You may have seen little “RSS” buttons around the Internet. If you were wondering what they are… “RSS” means “Really Simple Syndication.”, however there are some people who like to call it “Rich Site Summary” Basically RSS is one of the newest ways to distribute information on and over the internet.

RSS is good as it solves two very important issues when it comes it distributing content:

1. It allows you to receive the latest up to date content from your favourite website(s) without even having to visit them.

2. RSS helps protect your privacy as you no longer need to give out your email to join individual website newsletters – unless you want to. When you subscribe to a site’s RSS feed, the information from that feed is sent directly to you. No need to go out and check for updates all the time.

How do you get started?

Easy! There are two ways to get started – you can download a free RSS Reader:

Windows — RssReader – http://www.rssreader.com
Mac — NetNewsWire – http://ranchero.com/netnewswire

Or…..

You can use a internet based RSS Feed Reader service. On top of this the newer version of internet browsers now have RSS Readers builtin. (You can add our RSS Feed to your browser by clicking here) Once you’re set up, here’s all you have to do… Right-click (control-click for Mac users) on any RSS button on a site, blog or news source that interests you. Then select Copy Shortcut (“Copy Link to Clipboard” for Mac, “Copy Link Location” for Firefox browsers), and paste that URL into your RSS Reader. And that’s it! You’re subscribed.
